If your azalea bushes are dying, look for pests. Two boring insects that cause dying branches on azaleas include the rhododendron borer and the rhododendron stem borer. Although the names are similar, these are two distinctly different insects.

What does a dying azalea look like?

Over-watering creates soggy soil and azaleas are prone to root rot when their growing environment is overly moist. Under-watering causes the plant to die from dehydration. The initial signs are the same – yellowing leaves that fall off the plant. Sometimes the leaves will also develop spots after turning yellow.

Take your fingernail and lightly scrape the stem. If the you see green where you scraped the stem the plant is still alive. If it isn't green go further down the stem until you find green. You will need to trim off any part of the stem that isn't green.
